Afghan refugee help

ssalam o Alaikum,

We are grateful to Allah (SWT) for the opportunity that has been bestowed upon us.  BIS along with other organizations, is gearing up to welcome Afghan refugee families to our great city of Birmingham. There may be as many as 7 families. We are expecting families to arrive starting November 15.  Incoming families will be needing a lot of help in their resettlement. Please donate generously towards this cause.   Please click to make monetary donations.  If you write a check, please write on your “Afghan Refugees Support” in the memo section.

One can also make donations of the items (see attached list), please email to brother Saleem at, to let him know what items you will be donating.

Best way is to use our wish list at Walmart (please make hyperlink), Please forward the confirmation email to sister Abeer at , to get credit for your donation for tax purposes

“Working with Inspiritus and Alabama Interfaith Refugee Partnership (ALIRP),  Birmingham Islamic Society’s Outreach committee is getting ready for the arrival of about 7 Afghan families to Birmingham.  We do not know the exact date but it may be another two to three weeks before they arrive.

Here are the needs:

  • The most important need is housing.  Inspiritus is looking for house/apartments available for rent that are within walking distance for public transportation.  Please email brother Ashfaq at if you can or you know someone who can help.
  • We need volunteers.  To be a volunteer, one must pass the background check, cost of $35 is expected from the volunteer, if one cannot afford it, BIS will cover the cost. Volunteer needs to attend a one-hour orientation, which is recorded and can be viewed at your convenience.
